Moody AFB is located in south-central Georgia, just 30 miles north of the Florida border. The installation is located in Lowndes and Lanier Counties and is about 10 miles northeast of the city of Valdosta on Georgia Highway 125 (Bemiss Road).
Located within the Lower Coastal Plain of Georgia, Moody AFB contains a diverse assemblage of native flora and fauna. The upland forests of the installation are dominated by native pines, with interspersed hardwood species. The central part of the installation is dominated by a large Carolina Bay bottomland hardwood system, part of the 12,000-acre Grand Bay-Banks Lake ecosystem. Common game animals on Moody AFB include white-tailed deer, eastern wild turkey, feral hogs, gray squirrels, eastern cottontails, and northern bobwhite quail. Common game fish include largemouth bass, bluegill, and channel catfish.

Grassy Pond is a 500+ acre recreation area located in Lake Park, Georgia. Grassy Pond is known for its 250 acre pond and campsite, with 19 cabins, 39 RV/Tent sites, four group shelters and a recreational boat area. Grassy Pond is open to the public, and offers a variety of facilities and activities to visitors, including a three-mile nature trail surrounding the lake.
Picnic Areas
Picnicking is permitted in designated areas throughout the grounds. Tables and shelters are available.
Grassy Pond Group Shelters/Squadron Parties
There are four large, screened shelters for group use. All have electricity, water and cooking grills. These facilities can be reserved by calling Grassy Pond at 229-559-5840.
Cabins and RV/Tent Sites
Grassy Pond offers rental cabins and RV/Tent sites. There are fifteen two-bedroom cabins and four two-bedroom cabins. Each are equipped with a stove, a refrigerator, beds (linens available for additional charge), television with cable, and basic eating utensils. Moody Family Camp (FAMCAMP) facilities are located in a peaceful, serene, tree lined area. There are currently 39 prime sites. Each site has a 50/30/20 amp fuse box, water and sewage connections.
Nature Trail
You can enjoy our 3.1-mile and one mile nature trails. Rest areas, picnic areas and information plaques can be found along the trails. Whether you take a healthy hike, or simply stroll and enjoy the scenic beauty, you will enjoy yourself. Bring your bicycle!
Playgrounds
Grassy pond playgrounds offer many fun activities including swings, slides and more. There is also a volleyball court and basketball court at Grassy Pond.
Wading Pool
Don’t forget to bring your children’s bathing suits. Our wading pool is open from early spring to late fall. The pool is two feet deep.
Boating Information
Fishing boats are available for rent with or without motors. Pedal boats are available for a minimal charge. Children under 12 years of age must be accompanied by an adult.
Privately Owned Boats
All are permitted, but must meet to all State safety requirements. All boaters must check- in and pay a launch fee prior to launching their boats.
Grassy Pond is open year-round for fishing. Customers aged 16 or older must have valid Georgia State fishing license and a Moody AFB permit, which can be purchased on this site.
Fish size and limits are set by the State of Georgia. Hunting is not permitted at Grassy Pond as wildlife and plant life are protected in this area. Please respect the environment so that others can enjoy the beauty of Grassy Pond.
The eastern part of Moody AFB, Grand Bay Range, has been incorporated into the Georgia DNR's Grand Bay Wildlife Management Area (WMA). This area is open to the public for hunting and fishing on scheduled weekends when the Range is not being used for military training. A Georgia WMA Stamp or Moody AFB Hunting or Combination Permit is required for access to Grand Bay WMA. Please check the official State of Georgia Hunting Regulation Handbook for information on scheduled hunting dates for this area.
Mission Lake is a 30-acre impoundment located on Moody AFB's Main Base southwest of the airfield. This lake is managed by Moody AFB and stocked with largemouth bass, bluegill, and channel catfish. There is a large aluminum fishing dock available for use, and plenty of areas for bank fishing. A boat ramp is located on the western side of the lake. Both a Georgia state fishing license and a Moody AFB fishing permit are required to fish at Mission Lake. Access to Mission Lake is limited to DoD CAC holders and their guests.
